One Bad Crab
Filmmaker Sandy Cannon-Brown has produced a provocative new documentary, “One Bad Crab,” about the invasive green crab, based on an article in Marth'a’s vineyard Magazine by Nelson Sigelman. Cannon-Brown has traveled throughout New England to find out what’s being done with these nasty invaders that threaten scallops, quahogs, and soft-shell clams. Tisbury Waterways, Inc. (TWI), the film’s fiscal sponsor, will host a premiere of this fascinating new documentary at the Film Center in Vineyard Haven on Sunday, March 9, 2025, at 4 p.m. A lively panel discussion and a unique reception featuring green crab appetizers follow the 30-minute film.
The documentary looks at what the Shellfish Group on Martha’s Vineyard is doing to propagate and protect the Island’s treasured quahogs and scallops. It also explores the research that’s being done to better understand green crabs and their interaction with other marine life. And it reveals innovative ways fishermen and restaurants throughout New England are making use of this prolific and destructive crab. Cannon-Brown shot more than 50 hours of footage in multiple locations and is the film’s editor. She is providing those services pro bono.
TWI, as the film’s fiscal sponsor, hopes to raise $15,000 to cover other expenses, including the licensing of some phenomenal drone and underwater footage and an original music score.
